happy anniversary to us

Seven years ago me and some of my favorite girls woke up, went to the hair salon, got some coffee and muffins and headed off to the Manor House very early in the morning.  We got dressed, did makeup and took pictures, all to prepare to walk down the aisle by 11:30 in the morning.  I met Jay down a tangled little path through a garden and we a had a very short, simple ceremony.  We got to enjoy lunch with friends and family and then started off on our honeymoon and a lifetime of adventures!

Over the past seven years we have moved over ten hours away from everyone we knew, bought and remodeled a house, met friends that we will have for a lifetime, served in a church, had two dogs and one baby, and enjoyed every bump of the ride!

Seven years of marriage, seven years of dating before that and best friends for half of our lives.  Looking forward to a lifetime of bumps, curves and maybe a loopty-loop or two!

i’m a liar, charlotte is psychic and my mom is a genius!

The month of May was a different and challenging month here at the hess residence! Charlotte really did give us a run for our money at times and was the most charming, adorable baby at other times. The minute that I published the blog about Charlotte being two months old and how much I was in love with her gummy grin, I believe she did not grin again at night for three weeks! We had our ups and we had our downs.  But as a mommy I really did learn a bunch.  Charlotte took me to mommy school and I think I might have passed.  Some valuable lessons that I learned at this schooling that Charlotte put me through are as follows:

1. I am a liar.  No matter what I say or think (we will get to that with point two) Charlotte will do the opposite.  If I email Jay while he is at work and brag about what a good mommy I was that day...give it about 60 minutes and it will be a different story.  If I make the comment that we have gone a long time since we had a rough night...bam, not anymore.  It actually has gotten fairly comical.  Jay and I find ourselves starting to say something about our lives with our little cutie and then abruptly stop, afraid that we would jinx ourselves.  We have never been superstitious people, but children can do crazy things to people!

2. Charlotte is psychic.  It is true.  My baby has the rare gift of reading minds.  Once Jay and I stopped conversing about our luck or trials of the day she started to be able to read minds.  It is amazing at the speed that she can accomplish this unbelievable task.  You will be thinking to yourself that you are going to do this or that and she will look you in your eyes and change everything that you planned.  She can also perform this amazing ability while sleeping.  Don’t dare think how wonderfully she has been sleeping, she will know what you are thinking!

3. My mom is a genius.  Mom’s never cease to amaze me.  We have already had a miracle healing from one mother and now my own mom swoops into town and fixes Charlotte once again.  We had a gotten the gas, sleeping and schedule all figured out earlier in the month, but that did not last long. My mom came for a week long visit last week and the day before she arrived Charlotte hit her three month growth spurt and with a vengeance! To make a very long, sleepless story short.  We don’t think the big C was getting enough to eat through her growth spurt and after a doctor’s visit and some decision making on our part we have her nursing and taking some little snacks of formula.  I do not think we could have clearly diagnosed what was the matter with Charlotte without my moms help.  Fresh experienced eyes are always a blessing!

Along with my mom being able to really identify Charlotte’s needs.  We also got all the squares completed for the beach quilt!  It took me two months to complete the first 30 squares and a day and a half to finish the last 30. We had an amazing system of my constant sewing paired with my mom constantly ironing.   What I can accomplish with some help from my momma!

I am glad that the month of May is over.

I am looking forward to the summer and all of the fun trips we have planned.

I am curious about what Charlotte is going to teach me next in her mommy school that she is putting me through!

sewn, sewing, will sew

I feel like a brand new woman, thanks to Charlotte’s new schedule...props to the mother-in-law again!  I now suddenly have times during the day to get some stuff done.  Now I understand that this time should be used wisely by cleaning, organizing, laundering, etc. But I am also bound to use at least one nap a day for creative purposes.  If I play my cards right and use my time wisely I think this is an attainable goal.  I have got some creative juices flowing since the birth of the cutest little girl ever, but much of my time has just been dreaming about what I could do.  So the following blog post is dedicated to what I have done, what I am working on and what I plan to get finished this summer. sewn

I have had some cute little projects this past spring including Benjamin’s Bunnies, Charlotte’s Derby Bonnet and some really great monthly onsies (I know that these have not been sewn, but have been created by my design loving husband).

sewing

I currently have one project in the works and that is the beach quilt. It needs to be complete by mid-july, ahhh!  I really need to get working on it, I am a third finished and have a good ways to go.  The problem is all these cute, fun easy projects keep getting in the way!  Here are some of my favorite blocks that I have made so far!

will sew

Even though I have a load to do on the beach quilt I am still always in the market for a good project or two, besides promising Jay the next quilt that will be made after I finish the beach quilt will be for him.

Wish me luck, hopefully our newly adopted schedule can really enable me to get some sewing done!  I know once school starts back up in the fall I will not be getting anything finished!

avoiding cabin fever by getting crafty

Charlotte has been in our lives now for 16 days, I have been home for 13 of those days and I am ashamed to say I already have a big dose of cabin fever.  I blame part of the fever on the weather, it has been rainy and cold in the great Va now for days.  I blame the other part on that horrible pediatrician that told us we could not leave the house for one month.  Either way I know that is my job to make sure that I do not go nuts and only I can control my attitude and this crazy fever that I have currently.  The best way for me to avoid this is by crafting.  I am not much of a crafter when it comes to holiday wreathes and potpourri arrangements, but I do love to sew.  So I have lined up some projects that in my opinion are very needed in the world and will keep me busy!

The first project that I have in mind is for Benjamin, my too cute nephew who lives in Ohio.  I think it is essential that he has a wonderfully handcrafted Easter present from his Auntie Mo and Uncle Jay.  After scouring my sewing blogs I have found these...

from the longthread.com.  I will post pictures as soon as they are finished.  Hopefully they will be perfect for him even if he doesn’t understand the whole bowling thing.  He can always chuck them across the house or use them as a weapon for the family dog...sorry Molly!

The second project that I have in mind has been in the back of my head floating around since around Christmas.  We have a good family friend that has a beach quilt.  I think it is the greatest idea to have a quilt that goes with you and your family every year to the beach.  I love the idea of having year after year of family pictures at the beach on top of the same family quilt.  I think it will be lovely to see the quilt age with the family over time.  So with all those lovely sentiments and gushy feelings out of the way, Jay and I went shopping online (remember I can not yet leave the house, not even for my favorite fabric stores) to find a fabric pack (called a jelly roll in the sewing world) that we both loved and thought would be perfect for a family beach quilt.  One of the first companies that we first searched was Moda, they are a great company with very diverse prints.  I like that the fabrics do not look like they have been designed by some old bird but also do not look too modern.  We settled on this.......

We thought that it would go perfectly with the quilt pattern that we had chosen from cluckclucksew.com

Now this project will be significantly more difficult and take up way more time than the cute bunnies for Benjamin, but I need to get working on it now if I want it complete by our Ocracoke trip in July which means I need to stop blogging!
