ready or not...here comes oliver

Sometimes babies come before their due date. Charlotte came 10 days after her due date. With a scheduled c-seciton this time around we have an exact date. Now we all know that Oliver may decide to show up earlier, but at least this time we have an absolute last possible date. So that does that mean? It means we need to start getting ready a bit. Charlotte has no idea that her world is about to change here pretty soon, so these trips to our neighborhood park a even more special because she won't be an only child much longer.

Melissa had a snow day at school on Friday and Monday was a holiday, so all of a sudden we had a four day weekend on our hands. When we moved to our temporary house we were sure to leave all of the baby stuff in a a pretty accessible part of the house. We packed Charlotte a mess of toys, snacks and other fun things and headed upstairs to dig out all of the baby stuff. Melissa is pretty organized when it comes to most things, so we were able to find what we needed fairly quickly. We sifted through some of Charlotte's newborn and 0-3 month clothes to see if we had anything neutral in color. We found the bottles, baby bath and other things like the swing. Charlotte has been cozying up each night and rocking a bit. Hard to believe, just two years ago, she barely took up half of that thing. Can you say wedding day slide show pic?

Melissa has also been working hard on Oliver's quilt and joking that Oliver can't arrive until the quilt is done. I commented that if he comes early we'll just have to bring her sewing machine to the hospital so she can finish it before we come home. We picked out the fabric a few weeks ago and used the same design as Charlotte's quilt. When Melissa was pregnant with Charlotte she finished her quilt in November. Can you say second child? The four day weekend allowed us to get a lot of things finished and Sunday night the quilt was complete. Here are a couple shots of the quilt, Charlotte and the dogs. When I have the camera out I just can't resist. Stay tuned for more Oliver centric decorations. Since we'll only be in Virginia for a few more months (that sounds weird), Oliver will be living in our bedroom closet, which we are calling his room. It is small, but it will be decorated, so check back for pictures so you can see his "crib". Ok, I'll stop now.

The chevron fabric on the back will be fun for a baby's eyes.

This fabric reminds me of Charlotte and Oliver playing a few years down the road.

Another shot of the back.

Please excuse Charlotte or maybe her parents. She slept with her hair things in. Also, yes those are her zebra print pajamas, with a fleece hoodie overtop.

Jack's nose.

He's a good looking boy.

Abby is only 8, but she's starting to show her age a bit. Thanks for stopping by!

baby quilts and family quilts

Over the summer two of the favorite girls I have met so far in my life had babies.  Of course I could shower both ladies with cute outfits, toys, stuffed animals, the works.  But that isn't me.  They needed homemade quilts! Because I was very first trimester all summer long, I was kind of a loser when it came to making two completely unique quilts.  I found fabric that I liked and decided to use the fabric on both quilts, but of course I used two different patterns.

The first quilt was for a sweet little boy named Lincoln.  I wanted to make a genuine richmond va little boy quilt.  What do you think of when you think of richmond little boys?  For me it is bow ties!  So here you go, one little bow tie quilt!

I just drew out the pattern on some paper and it worked out pretty nicely.  One quilt for a sweet little boy!

For the second quilt that was up to be made was for one family that we hold very dear to our hearts.  Mom and Dad are one of our dearest friends, Baylor is one of C's besties and I knew that new baby Chatham would be beloved by our whole family.  Because Baylor was born literally months before I started quilting he never really got a baby quilt.  So instead of baby Chatham getting a baby quilt and poor Baylor not having one, I just made a family quilt.  Same fabric as before but this time I used a pattern by one of my favorite websites cluck cluck sew.

I hope this quilt will be used by their family for years to come.  With years of stains and memories made on it!

Congrats girls!  Love both of you and your families dearly!

cover up!

As in all things in life, as soon as I figure one thing out it changes.  This primarily deals with C.  These are things that I am confident of: C is going to love the pool and beach.

It is my job to keep her warm.

She most likely will not let me wrap her up and cuddle with her in a towel after getting wet.

We are going to be busy this summer.

I need to get my junk together.

My plan was to make her a SUPER cheap, easy and cute cover up.  One of my favorite blogs is made by rae.  I have made several things using her patterns including this adorable bonnet.  So I purchased her online pattern, and whipped one up.  If you have never made clothes before this is a great first attempt.  It came together easy, she provides excellent directions and it is a quick two nap project.  I also really like how customizable her patterns are.  She provides options for short or long sleeve, hood, lined hood or no hood, full wrap around tie or half attached tie.

For C's cover up I used two towels from Walmart that cost six dollars each (you could totally do it with one towel) and for the border I used some left over binding from the beach quilt that I made last spring.  The pattern comes in three sizes and I chose to make one that I knew would be a little big, but maybe would fit her next year.  It stayed on fine and she could still walk and play in it, while keeping away the shivers!

t-shirt pillows

Jay was getting rid of some clothes a while back and as he was going through making piles I was also making my own piles.  He would throw a t-shirt, polo or dress shirt one way and I would snatch the ones that I just couldn't let go.  If you are like me then you really get attached to certain things.  Some of the clothes that he was getting rid of I have certain memories of; a shirt he wore to an after prom (yes, he has some old clothes still around), the shirt we got engaged in, a shirt that I remember him preaching in and so on.  Even though he was complaining that I was a pack rat and that I should be on the show hoarders, I stilled scored some shirts that I wanted to keep around for a little longer. He made me state the purpose of each item I was hoarding and I knew as soon as I saw these three shirts they would make cute summer pillows.  So, here are the shirts and pillows.

After a bit of cutting, sewing, pleating and fluffing this is what I came up with.  I had one of the pillows and bought the other two from Walmart for six dollars a piece.  Twelve dollars for three pillows is not bad in my opinion!

This is my personal favorite.  Jay wore this shirt a whole bunch.  I never really liked it as a shirt, but I think it makes a really cute pillow!

As for the other shirts that I put back I have plans for them to become one fabulous quilt.  I have still never made a quilt for myself, so I am taking a bunch of Jay's old dress shirts and making them into a chevron quilt for myself.  It is going to be one of my major summer projects and my next quilt along!
